How much wallpaper paste is needed?
Wallpaper adhesive is applied to the wall or the paper before hanging. A gallon of ready-mixed paste generally covers 200-250 square feet — heavier textured papers absorb more, as do porous or newly primed walls. Dry paste powders list their coverage per packet and are usually cheaper per square foot.
Add 10-20% extra for heavy or embossed wallpaper: the goal is enough paste to keep every seam tight and edges sealed, because re-pasting a dried wallpaper edge is nearly impossible. If you are using a specialized border, it usually needs its own adhesive — check the border label.
Paste application tips
- Use a roller or wide brush for even coverage.
- Let paper "book" for a few minutes before hanging so paste absorbs.
- Keep paste container sealed — it dries quickly.
